General Guidelines for Volunteers
We are looking for individuals who fit the following qualifications, please read the following carefully before applying:
- Age 18 or older, students or professionals with skills in medicine, agriculture, public health, environment, sanitation, nursing, education, vocational training, project planning, management, or any other related development field.
- Passionate about global health and development issues
- Excited to learn and observe in rural, resource-limited settings
- All volunteers must pay a program fee of $ 500 per month which includes a donation towards your project and the organization, as well as the funds necessary for your basic expenses while in Uganda (i.e.: food and bored).
- Willing to work hard as a volunteer, with the realization that some of the most valuable work a short-term volunteer can do for a project is to fundraise or work towards obtaining donated goods and services for the project.
- Understanding of the limitations inherent in being an international volunteer with an emphasis on projects that are high-quality, professional, and in accordance with our core values: we want volunteers who want to have fun working with people in Uganda, rather than being insulated from the local people, and who want to have a truly meaningful volunteer experience, rather than a tourist experience.
- Respectful of local cultures and people, respectful of the policies and guidelines set forth by our organization and our partners' organizations.
- Open-mindedness, flexibility, ability to think on your feet, leadership experience, willingness to fundraise for the cause, and previous experience in resource-limited settings at home or abroad are all plusses!
- There will be opportunities for shadowing Ugandan health professionals and healthcare workers in the clinics for anyone in any project who desires to learn more about the delivery of healthcare in Uganda. There will also be opportunities to visit an orphanage in the Iganga district and to learn more about the issues facing orphans in sub-Saharan Africa for volunteers in any project who have a special interest.
- Dates are not set in stone, please note any constraints you have time-wise on your application.
- Able to fluently speak and write in English.
- Although not common, theft is a possibility. UDHA does not take any responsibly for goods stolen or lost.
- Check your local embassy for Ugandan visa, immunization, and passport requirements.
